With Obama in London, anything’s possible

I helped get Tony Blair into power. Now, I don’t take all the credit - or all the blame. But I was one of the people knocking on doors, delivering leaflets, answering the phones. And I experienced the amazing, anything’s possible, morning-after feeling of the 1997 election result. I remembered it again when Obama won. Hope, anticipation, a feeling of change - but this time not just for one country but for the whole world. What a weight of expectation!

In just a few weeks Obama comes to London for the first time to attend the G20 summit. And as the economic climate gets bleaker, the expectation grows. Obama’s already succeeded in turning expectations, ideas and policies upside down. Can he do it again at London’s G20 meeting? Because the world economic system needs nothing less, to really deliver on jobs, global justice and climate change.

So, if I was Obama how would I deal with that burden of expectation? Well, I might try and slip away from my minders for an afternoon on 28 March and join the Put People First march in London, to chat to some people, join in the chanting, maybe wave a banner. That would remind me to think about who won’t be there at the G20 summit and to listen carefully to try and pick up the voices that aren’t being heard.

The G20 are the world’s biggest economies. They will be making decisions that affect their own populations, but also the whole world. What about the poorest countries - and people - who don’t have a seat at the table? What would hope and progress look like for them?

Of course, I’m not Obama and I very much doubt he will be joining the Put People First march (although I will be looking out for him in the crowd and hope he’ll agree with our aims). I’ll be there because, despite knowing from experience the election euphoria quickly passes and that there are always going to be disappointments and difficulties, I still believe that anything’s possible. Go on Obama, go on G20. The people are watching, don’t disappoint us. With Obama in London, anything’s possible
